Bramble Crumble

There is something delightfully rustic about a home-made crumble. Serve it as dessert or with a cup of afternoon tea and your visitors will be in awe.

 

The fact is that crumbles are ease and quick to make. Even better, you can make a batch of crumble though in advance and store some in the freezer in cases of a sweetness emergency.

 

Pick your brambles on a sunny day and you'll have great comfort food to serve when the weather turns dreadful!

Start by cutting your butter into smaller cubes. Pour the flower, the sugar and the butter into a large bowl and start kneading them with your fingers. It doesn’t take longer than a few minutes. Mind you, we’re not looking for one large ball of smooth dough, but we want a rough and grainy crumbling dough.

 

Preheat the oven somewhere between 180 degrees Celsius and 200 degrees Celsius (that’s between 350 degrees and 390 degrees Fahrenheit, more or less). It depends on the type of fruits you’re using really. Brambles cook quite fast, apples for example take a while longer.

In the meanwhile, take out your oven-proof dishes. You could go for one large oven dish I guess, but I like to serve individual portions, so a crumble is always a good excuse to bring out my ramekins. Layer each ramekin with a layer of the fruit you have cleaned (and if need be, peeled) and cover that layer with a layer of crumble dough, until you can’t see the fruit any more.

 

Slide them into the heated oven for about 15-20 minutes, again depending on the fruits you’re using. If need be, put on the grill, so your crumble on top gets nice and crispy. You can serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, custard or whatever you fancy!
